The SK model is a single-stage liquid ring vacuum pump . This type of pump compresses gas by utilizing a vaned impeller , which is rotated within a cylindrical casing . Typically , water is supplied to the pump and through centrifugal acceleration , forms a moving cylindrical ring against the inside of the casing . This liquid ring establishes a series of seals in the space between the impeller vanes , which then creates compression chambers . Due to the eccentricity between the impeller's axis of rotation and the casing geometric axis , there is a periodic variation of the volume enclosed by the vanes and the ring . Gas , such as air , is drawn into the pump through an inlet port located at the end of the casing . The gas is trapped within the compression chambers created by the impeller vanes and the liquid ring . As a result of the impeller rotation , the gas is compressed, which leads to discharge from the pump through a port also located at the end of the casing . Nonetheless , it is worth noting that although the compressed gas may contain a certain amount of working liquid , this can be removed through the use of a vapor-liquid separator .
